I grew up in East San Diego and attended local public schools.  I joined clubs and organizations in junior and senior high school where I was afforded leadership opportunities with the American Red Cross program, Junior Kiwanis, Army ROTC, and the San Diego Police Department’s Explorer program.

The Explorer program influenced me the most and at 22-years-old, I left my job with San Diego Gas & Electric and entered the police academy in 1980.    My most memorable work C0007includes walking a beat and cleaning up a crime-ridden neighborhood now known as the Gaslamp Quarter; being involved in the Green River Killer serial murder case; and designing curfew and truancy programs currently utilized by the police department that provide immediate and long term intervention for at-risk youths.

I spent six years on the board of directors of the San Diego Police Officer’s Association serving as a director, treasurer, political action chair, and general manager.  The experience allowed me to comprehend budgets, understand and maneuver through political arenas, and engage in contract negotiations and bargaining.

My wife of 21 years, Laura, and I have called Santee home since 1992.  It was here that we put down roots and began true community involvement.  I joined the Santee Kiwanis and then Santee Park & Recreation Committee (SPARC) while serving as president of my homeowner’s association.

In 2002, I was elected to the Santee City Council.  I serve, or have served, on the League of California Cities, Heartland Communications, CSA69, East County Economic Development Council, Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) board of directors, San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) Borders Committee (chair), and Santee Community Oriented Policing Committee (chair).

I participate annually with many events in Santee.  Such as; the Santee Firefighter’s Pancake Breakfast, Santee’s American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, Santee Chamber of Commerce Awards ceremony, Miss Santee & Miss Santee Teen pageant, Santee Street Fair, Christmas tree lighting, the summer concert series, and Santee Salutes (4th of July).
